During Advent, we celebrate the three comings of Christ. We recall the historical birth of Jesus in Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago. We give thanks for the mystery of the Incarnate Word present in the Sacraments today. And we prepare for the day when Christ the King will come again in majestic glory at the end of time.

Natural light changes during December. As the days shorten, the darkness envelopes us earlier each day. Yet, Jesus’ disciples are never truly in darkness because we are children of the true Light, the Christ.

Jesus told his followers that in order to enter the Kingdom of God they had to become like obedient children, completely dependent on the Father. As we prepare for Christmas, we can easily become jaded by the seasonal commercialism and forget about the awe and wonder of the true reason for the Christmas season.

Throughout the week many of us become consumed by the business of life and our growing to-do lists. This hectic lifestyle makes it difficult to eat nutritious meals at regular hours. Exercise gets moved to the bottom of our priority lists. And sleep is frequently interrupted because our minds race with thoughts of upcoming tasks.

Working in isolation is rarely a good thing for a Christian. There are moments when we need to be by ourselves with God, but we are not alone even in those moments. God created each of us to be in relationship with him and others.
