Teach the Mission
As part of the continuing dynamic online content for Be My Disciples, RCL Benziger has developed a new and exciting e-learning scavenger hunt called Disciple Mission. This activity has been designed for each unit at each grade level. By using the Disciple Mission activities, you can help your students become digital disciples as they take an online pilgrimage to learn more about the Catholic faith.
During each Mission Assignment, students will document their Disciple Mission by using their Travel Journals to:
- Prepare for the pilgrimage. During this first phase of the pilgrimage, students will describe the Disciple Power habits from a unit chapter.
- Select a destination. During this second phase of the pilgrimage, students will choose a particular destination based upon what they learned from the corresponding The Church Follows Jesus pages. Then they will explore their destination through an e-learning scavenger hunt based upon the popular WebQuest Model developed primarily by Bernie Dodge.
- Arrive at their destination. During this final third phase of the pilgrimage, students will reflect on their pilgrimage incorporating the corresponding I Follow Jesus page.
During these Mission Assignments consider yourself their “tour guide.” In this role, you will need to help them:
- Understand what a pilgrimage is and is not. Reinforce that a pilgrimage is a faith journey, and so “the way” is just as important as the “final destination.” As pilgrims of faith, we look to God as the One who lights our way. And we seek Heaven as our true final destination. Therefore all earthly pilgrimages are to help us find our way to God in Heaven.
- Describe the “signs” that point them toward their destinations. These spiritual signs are based upon their own descriptions of the Disciple Power habits found on the corresponding chapter’s The Church Follows Jesus page. This connection is important because the Church is our model pilgrim who knows the path to God.
- Traverse the “terrain” along the way. All pilgrimages involve obstacles and knowing more about your destination helps us navigate our way. Help your students become the best digital disciples by safely using various Web sites to learn more their destinations. Provide additional or alternative online resources as time permits.
- Appreciate the arrival. Remind students that this Mission Assignment is a spiritual pilgrimage, which means that the places we travel affect our lives. Take the time necessary to reflect on both the journey and the destination using the questions provided.
Please let us know how your students fare on their pilgrimages. And may the Lord guide you and your students and direct their journey with the light of grace so that they are brought to their destination with faith, hope, and love.
